Anthropic's Claude Code restricts recreation of existing games

Anthropic's Claude Code has gained a specific rule to guide the Claude Opus 5.5 model not to recreate existing games, even if the user renames them or describes them as original.

What happened?

The change was identified around October 27, 2026, by an X user known as Chasm. He shared the text of the instruction, delivered server-side under the internal identifier "tengu_heron_brook": "Do build original games, games in a genre, and games from the user's own designs and assets. Do not build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called original."

There is no option for the user to disable the rule. Anthropic confirmed the change on October 30 through Addy Osmani, a member of the technical staff. He stated on X that the company "added two sentences to Claude Code's prompt on Opus 5.5 to steer it away from recreating someone else's specific game because using Claude to infringe IP is against our usage policy."

Osmani clarified that original games, games in a genre, and projects based on the user's own designs and assets should continue to work normally. The company said it will continue iterating to find the right balance and asked developers whose legitimate work is refused to send feedback.

Why does this matter?

The move comes amid growing concern in the games industry about the use of AI tools to clone or recreate existing titles, including vibe-coded ports of classic games and demos from independent studios. Reports indicate that some developers canceled public playtests for fear that their games would be copied before official launch.

The rule is not an absolute block in all cases, according to later independent tests, but represents an attempt by Anthropic to align the model's behavior with its usage policy, which already prohibits intellectual property violations. It applies specifically to Claude Code sessions with the Opus 5.5 model.

What has not yet been confirmed

So far, there is no detailed official statement from Anthropic on the exact scope of the rule regarding ports, decompilations, or generic references to mechanics. Some developers have reported impacts on legitimate work, and the company has indicated that it will make adjustments.
