BrainChip announced on Monday (2) the launch of the AKD1500 development kit for Raspberry Pi 5, enabling the development of ultra-low-power neuromorphic artificial intelligence applications on a popular makers and engineers platform.
What happened?
The kit pairs a Raspberry Pi 5 with BrainChip's AKD1500 M.2 board. The AKD1500 chip uses an event-based neuromorphic architecture, processing only relevant data instead of continuously analyzing all inputs, which drastically reduces power consumption and heat.
It supports on-chip learning, allowing the device to learn new classes (such as gestures, keywords or objects) locally, without cloud retraining. MetaTF tools and models are free via the Developer Hub.
Why does this matter?
Edge devices like sensors, wearables and industrial equipment need always-on AI without draining batteries or relying on the cloud for latency and privacy. The event-based approach solves this efficiently. The edge computing market is projected to grow from US$111 billion in 2026 to US$317 billion in 2031.
By placing the technology on Raspberry Pi, BrainChip facilitates adoption by millions of developers, with a direct path from prototype to production on the same chip.
What changes in practice?
Makers and companies can quickly prototype low-power vision, detection and robotics applications. The kit is available now on the BrainChip shop. This accelerates the entry of neuromorphic AI into everyday products, from smart home to industry.
