Why Armored Trooper Votoms Die Graue Hexe matters

Votoms has been one of Japan’s most influential mecha franchises since 1983. Armored Trooper Votoms Die Graue Hexe is the first completely new theatrical film in about 15 years and Oshii’s first animated feature since The Sky Crawlers (2008). The story is set near the end of a 100-year conflict between Gilgamesh and Balarant, with officer Maki Stauffenberg (Mabuki Ando) investigating penal soldier Ash Vamps, known as the "Witch" for always returning alive.
