Anthropic warns AI may soon accelerate its own research and reports nearly $17B quarter

Anthropic updated its IPO prospectus (S-1/A) and warned that its future models may soon meet the internal threshold for dramatic acceleration of AI research, the scenario often called recursive self-improvement. The company says internal estimates about future models, not current ones, indicate it "may imminently" meet its Responsible Scaling Policy definition of dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI.

No current model has been designated as exceeding that threshold, and the company is still assessing the data. Anthropic acknowledges measurement difficulties, as much of the evidence comes from lagging indicators. The company does not expect to safely let Claude design and build successive frontier models on its own without meaningful human supervision and is considering policy adjustments to keep humans in control.

Third-quarter revenue and costs

Third-quarter revenue reached $16.96 billion, up 1,127% from the same period in 2025 and about 47% above the second quarter. Over the nine months ended September 30, total revenue was $33.24 billion, compared with $2.55 billion a year earlier. Compute and infrastructure costs rose to $9.86 billion in the quarter, and the company recorded an operating loss of $567 million after operating income in the prior quarter.

The nine-month net loss was $104 billion, largely from fair-value changes in convertible notes and other instruments. Anthropic reports more than 1,900 customers paying $1 million or more over the trailing twelve months and about 250 paying $10 million or more. Purchase commitments and leases total about $895.4 billion, mainly for compute.
