AMD announced on Tuesday (October 20, 2026) the expansion of FSR Upscaling 4.1, its machine learning-based upscaling technology, to a wide range of devices. The move includes Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards, Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI 9 processors, handhelds with Z2 Extreme and Z2A chips, and, soon, the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.
The announcement was made by Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s Computing and Graphics Group, in a post on X and in an official video, with participation from Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet. According to the company, FSR 4.1 reconstructs high-quality images from lower-resolution frames, offering a significant leap in visual quality over FSR 3.1.
What changes in practice
For owners of Radeon RX 6000 Series cards (released in 2020), the update is available today via the Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver. AMD optimized the INT8 model originally created for the RX 7000 series, enabling support for older cards. This means gamers with previous-generation hardware can get better image quality without needing to upgrade their GPU.
On handhelds such as the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X (with Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme) and laptops with Ryzen AI 9, a more efficient version of the model was developed specifically for that hardware. Availability on portable devices may vary by manufacturer.
On Xbox Series X|S consoles, FSR 4.1 is expected to arrive “soon.” Van Vliet highlighted the long-standing partnership between Xbox and AMD, which includes technologies such as DirectX and Auto SR. The announcement also mentioned that Project Helix (the next generation of Xbox hardware) will use the upcoming FSR Diamond.
Other advances
- FSR Redstone is already present in more than 400 games on Radeon RX 9000 Series cards.
- Improvements to FSR Frame Generation frame pacing for smoother gameplay.
- Vulkan support coming soon, allowing use in more engines and games.
FSR 4, previously known as Project Redstone, is AMD’s first machine learning upscaler and aims for greater parity with competing solutions such as NVIDIA’s DLSS.
